June is Pride month. Pride is a celebration and recognition of the Stonewall Riots and all those who have paved the way for LGBTQ equality. On June 28, 1969, after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, an underground queer bar in New York City, the LGBTQ community and supporters rioted and fought back against legal and social repression of the community.
At the Sex Workers Outreach Project, we very much care about Pride celebrations. Pride is as much a day for sex workers as it is for the LGBTQ community. While many of us come from a wide variety of backgrounds and may not identify as LGBTQ, sex workers can and should proudly, loudly and wildly participate in the beauty and community celebration that Pride activities mean for people around the country.
The St. Petersburg Pride parade is June 25, 2016. This is the biggest Pride parade in the Tampa bay Area and the only night parade. The purpose of St Pete Pride is to promote unity, visibility, self-esteem and a positive image of and among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community of Tampa Bay and throughout the State of Florida by way of cultural and educational programs and activities.
SWOP Tampa Bay will be walking in the Pride Parade in collaboration with Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, as our missions closely dovetail. Both organizations stand for diversity, body autonomy, access to abortion, and harm reduction. We’ll be tossing beads, condoms, and dental dams. Come out to be with us! It is an especially important time to stand in solidarity and mourning after the murder of so many of the LGBTQ family in Orlando.
